Question
Are you still able to learn new things you find interesting outside of work? Assuming you guys have gotten busy lately. I’m curious if you’ve been able to build a routine that allows for time to explore interests or learn new ideas.
Answer
Yes to “learn new things”, generally no to “outside of work”.
Around 2020 my life became fully consumed by MA, in a good way. There’s a wide variety of stuff that I enjoy doing, math / coding / writing / reading research literature to work into writing / etc., that has all gotten unified under the MA umbrella (plus a bunch of new activities have popped up that I never would have previously guessed I’d be doing, such as tweeting & podcasting).
The 2 main benefits that I’ve experienced having these things unified under MA are 1) all these things now compound into each other, and 2) I’ve gotten serious about them to a level that I definitely wouldn’t have otherwise.
The main non-work things I do nowadays are daily exercise, some house chores, and bonding with my wife and occasionally sister-in-law and parents (which often absorbs hobby-like activities such as ice skating, learning biology, playing guitar, going to a concert, spinning up on a musical artist, etc.).
So, pretty much all the activities I do compound into work or family relationships.
